Conformal Field Theory

(Φ-802) -  Vasileios Niarchos

Περιγραφή Μαθήματος

This brief course of 8 lectures provides an introduction to modern (relativistic) Conformal Field Theory (CFT). This subject, which is an integral part of Quantum Field Theory, has many applications to Theoretical High Energy Physics, Condensed Matter and Mathematical Physics.

Typically, Conformal Field Theories (in different spacetime dimensions) describe the extreme high-energy (short distance) and low-energy (large-distance) limits of a generic Quantum Field Theory. They also describe the quantum physics of continuous phases transitions in physical systems. In perturbative String theory, two-dimensional CFTs on Riemann surfaces provide the basis of the worldsheet description of  interacting strings.

In Part 1 the student will be introduced to the key concepts behind modern developments in CFT in d>2 spacetime dimensions.

Part 2 is devoted to an introduction of the basics of Conformal Field Theory in d=2 spacetime dimensions.
