Ηλεκτρομαγνητισμός ΙΙ (Κυματική)

(Φ-302) -  Γ. Τσιρώνης

Περιγραφή Μαθήματος

The course "Φ-302: Ηλεκτρομαγνητισμός ΙΙ (Κυματική)" has the parallel title "Propagation of electromagnetic waves in materials and metamaterials".  The course focuses on Electromagnetic theory with emphasis on ElectroMagnetic (EM) waves.  The course Φ-301 is a prerequisite since in 302 we start directly from Maxwell's equations and derive the linear wave equation for EM waves.  We follow three paths: (a) EM waves in vaccum, (b) EM waves in constraint geometries and (c) EM waves in matter and meta-mater.  In (a) we cover basic wave propagation properties, reflection, refraction, polarization etc. In (b) we cover waguides and cavities while (c), which is the main part of the course, describes waves in a variety of media.  The electromagnetic properties of a medium are characterised in the classical realm through electric permitivity  ε and magnetic permeability μ.  In standard materials both quantities are positive but in Left Handed Metamaterials (LHM) they are both negative.  This feature changes dramatically the propagation properties of EM waves and leads to a of variety new phenomena. In the main part of the course we will describe the engineering and physics of classical metamaterials and describe propagation phenomena in these.  We will also focus on certain types of quantum metamaterials and derive properties of EM propagation when they interact with qubits.

This is a 4th year course and needs basic knowledge of Electromagnetics, Partial Differential Equations, the Theory of Complex Functions while some familiarity with programming in python will be useful.  Although we recomend a number of books in Greek these cover only part (a) and (b) of the course. For the main part of the course (c), most literature will be in English and thus familiarity with the use of the language in physics is  very important.

EVALUATION

The course focusses on problem solving and not theories.  We will give a number of proposed problems to be solved by the students. If there is no Teaching Assitant for the course, these problems will not be collected or graded. There will be some computational problems as well.  We also plan to give a short introduction to Machine Leaning as can be applied in Electromagnetism.  In the course we plan to have four or five in-term exams including the final one that will be before Christmass. Thus we plan to have approximately ONE IN-TERM EXAM EVERY TWO or THREE WEEKS most likely in the form of multiple choice exam.  (Those familiar with my Φ-112 course should know that the multiple test part will be similar spirit).    The final grade will be approximately 50% in-term exams and 50% final exam or can be obtained only through the in-term exams.

Please note that this is a specialized course with basic but also very modern knowledge.  It will require lots of work during the semester on a weekly basis and you cannot simply attend the course and pass it in January.  I recommend to students that cannot follow the course in class and take the exams during the semester not to take the class.
