Course Outline Announcement: (Project, presentation guidelines and Proficiency certificates)
The ‘English 2 for Physics students’ course of the University of Crete is addressed to students with a sound grasp of general English who wish to further their proficiency in English for Academic purposes in the field of Physics.
Introduction:
This course focuses on the teaching of English for academic purposes, and study and communication skills in written and spoken form with emphasis on teamwork, participation, peer group teaching and confidence building. The language, study and presentation skills acquired in English II form the foundation for the courses “Φ-151” and “Φ-152”. The course requires the beginnings of project writing and presentation skills to be covered. The first Project Assignment – term paper - given in this course is subject specific and requires a mandatory short presentation in front of fellow students. Team-work is recommended, but all assignments are individual.
Course general components: Reading and analyzing authentic texts. Text organization. Extension of reading and writing skills: skimming, scanning, summarizing. Identification of reputable scientific sources. Hands-on Snowball Search, Preliminary Paper bibliography, Bibliography APA style (magazine papers only). Project format/outlay. Basic presentation skills to be covered. Grammar: Extension of grammatical aspects taught in English I (Φ-011).
In addition the students need to prepare a report on a topic of modern physics. Student’s choice. The choice of topic and choice of paper is based on the student’s ability. Students are given a list of reputable popular scientific magazines from which to choose their main paper for this semester.

Grading Scheme:
Hands-on Field-specific Presentations (20%) (70% awarded for content and sticking to the set deadline and 30% for successful delivery and knowledge of the topic vocabulary)

Final Exam (50%)
Presentation
Students will also have to give an oral presentation regarding the scholarly paper and supporting paper they used in their project (see below). Presentation duration should not exceed 5 minutes. If two students who happen to work on a goup of papers decide to give a joint presentation, they can do so as long as each of them speaks for about 5 minutes.
Students will be assessed on the following: presentation delivery (e.g. pace), body language (e.g. eye contact), content, language (e.g. sign-posting) and organisation.
The number of slides is not set as it depends on the content style and clarity of information presented. Fonts used should not be less than 30.
Citation and references should be provided throughout and at the end of the presentation, respectively.
The presentation should be submitted online either as a pptx, odp or pdf file by MARCH 17, 9.00 a.m. Late submissions are not accepted. All students are obliged to be present and AVAILABLE to give a presentation immediately in the following lectures.

Project
Students should submit a written project including the following parts:
- A cover page with the title of the scholarly paper, your name and registration number.
- Contents page
- Terminology section: a list of subject specific terms with: a) their definitions and b) their translation (minimum 40 terms)
- A summary of every paragraph in the paper (Paraphrased)
- A second summary of the whole paper with an appropriate opening sentence, acknowledgement of author(s) and reminder phrases (http://www.eapfoundation.com/reading/summarising/)
- A critical analysis (Comparison of the main paper with another one on a very similar topic) (Kindly note that this is this is NOT optional for English 2 students, i.e. it is MANDATORY)
- References (APA style, see here for guidelines http://www.bibme.org/citation-guide/apa/)
- Appendix: 1. A list of abbreviations (if any)
The project should be submitted online by 2 April, 8.00 a.m. Pair work is not allowed at this stage.
As in English 1, Students are required to find two scientific papers from any Physics journal(s), EXCLUDING https://arxiv.org, but INCLUDING any PEER REVIEWED journals found through the online library catalogue.
Papers SHOULD BE AT LEAST 6 pages long.
As before, Proficiency certificate holders will NOT be exempt of any of the English 2 course requirements.
