Introductory Announcement on English for Physics 1 (Φ011)

 

Dear students,

Welcome to English for Physics 1 (Φ011).

This is a mandatory course. 

Please be advised that holding a proficiency certificate is not the same as being proficient in English for academic purposes in the field of Physics. We would like to invite all students to actively participate in the class so as to further their knowledge in English for Physics, as that will help them in their studies and in their use of international scientific research published in English-speaking Journals, portals and related Media.

 

Introduction on continuous assessment elements of the course:

All students who register for the course are required to join the E-CLASS platform, in order to receive information and submit their work there.

 

Finding a topic for your presentations and projects: Students are required to find a scientific article/paper from one of the following journals, or ANY respected physics journal they can find in the library or online. Examples include:

1. Physics World
2. Physics Today
3. Scientific American or
4. New Scientist

 

DEADLINES:

PRESENTATION (week 6) 3/11 8 a.m.

PROJECT (week 8) 17/11 8 a.m.

 

Projects 

Your written project should include:

1. A cover page with the title of the scholarly article (from the recommended list), your name and registration number. 
2. Contents page
3. Terminology section: a list of subject specific terms and their translation
4. Paraphrased paragraphs (mini summaries)
5. A summary of the article with an appropriate opening sentence, acknowledgement of author(s) and reminder phrases (http://www.eapfoundation.com/reading/summarising/)
6. A brief critical analysis (Comparison of the main article with another one on a very similar topic) 
7. References (APA style)
8. Appendix: 1. A copy of the original article and 2. A list of abbreviations

Pair work is not allowed at this stage of your assignments.

 

Presentations 

Presentation duration should not exceed 4 minutes. Students will be assessed on the following: presentation delivery (e.g. pace), body language (e.g. eye contact), content, language (e.g. signposting, transitions) and organisation. 

 

The number of slides is not set as it depends on the content style and clarity of information presented. Fonts used should not be less than 28.

References (and citations) should also be provided throughout and at the end of the presentation. 

 

The presentation should be submitted online either as a pptx, libre office impress or a pdf in the dedicated e-class assignment space that will be provided. Other formats will be accepted only following prior approval by the instructor.

Grading Scheme:

Hands-on Field-specific Presentations (20%) (70% awarded for content and sticking to the set deadline and 30% for successful delivery and knowledge of the topic vocabulary)

Field-specific Projects (30%)

Final Exam (50%)
